Today, I want to talk to you about a topic that often sparks heated discussions in winter: dog coats. Do our dogs really need them? And what do they think about them?

As an animal communicator, I’m fortunate to hear directly from animals about how they experience things like this. And let me tell you: their answers are as unique as they are.

My Own Dogs: Thrilled About Their Coats

This winter, Ida and Maja are wearing coats too – and they love them! The lightweight designs allow them to move freely and make the cold season much more enjoyable for them. In fact, they’re always eager and ready to put their coats on before we head out.

What Other Animals Say

In conversations with other dogs, I’ve learned that not all of them find wearing a coat equally pleasant. Some appreciate the extra protection from cold and rain, while others dislike the sensation of fabric moving against their skin.

One Chihuahua I spoke to explained that he felt uncomfortable in a loose-fitting coat. If he had to wear one, it would need to be snug and secure without shifting around. But truthfully, he prefers going without a coat because he has plenty of his own “fire” to keep warm. Only when it’s really cold or wet does he enjoy having a bit of extra warmth.

Then there are dogs who feel much more comfortable with a coat and are happy to spend longer periods outdoors, thanks to the added warmth. For these dogs, a coat is a real blessing.

Looks Matter Too

I’ve also discovered that animals care about their appearance. Yes, you read that right! I remember a mare who absolutely refused to wear a blanket. Together, we explored what might change her mind. When she realized that the blanket’s color highlighted her beauty and made her look impressive, she suddenly embraced it and wore it with pride.

Maybe you can try telling your dog how great they look in a certain coat – sometimes, a sincere compliment can make all the difference!

No Right or Wrong

Just like with humans, there’s no universal “yes” or “no” when it comes to coats. Some animals get cold more easily, while others are hardy even in icy winds. The key is to observe your pet closely and tune into what they need.

Our animals no longer live as their wild ancestors did. A coat can help keep them healthy and make walks more enjoyable, even in harsh weather conditions.

So take the time to listen closely: What does your dog like? What makes them feel comfortable? And if they need a little convincing, explaining how a coat helps their body or even giving them a kind compliment might do the trick. 😉

Stay warm and healthy – you and your four-legged friend!

With love,
Tanja
