I hope you are enjoying the last days of the year and have the opportunity to reflect on the past – with all its highs, lows, and special moments. The turn of the year brings not only anticipation for many of us but also some challenges, especially if we have animal companions who may struggle with the noise and lights of New Year’s Eve. That’s why I want to share some thoughts, tips, and inspiration for a peaceful start to the new year with you.
Staying Calm for Both Humans and Animals
Thankfully, fireworks are becoming less common in many places, but it’s rarely completely quiet. If you have pets that are afraid of loud noises, the most important thing is to stay calm and composed yourself. Your inner state is transmitted to your beloved animals – both tension and relaxation. Don’t let yourself be overwhelmed by worry in advance. Instead, trust that you can be there for your pets and guide them through this situation.
No Blame, Just Understanding
You might feel upset about those who still set off fireworks and firecrackers despite everything. But remember: Your animals can sense this frustration as well. Try instead to show understanding and convey that to your pets too. Some people need fireworks as an outlet to be loud once a year, or they associate it with joy and tradition. Adopting this perspective can help you stay calmer.
Tips to Help You and Your Animals
- Physical Contact and Proximity: Many animals seek safety in our presence. If they like it, you can gently touch them, stroke them, or simply sit near them. You are their safe haven.
- Tools Like Thundershirts or Bandages: A Thundershirt or a Tellington Bandage can have a calming effect. You can find instructions for these online.
- Creating Distractions: Play with your pets if they are open to it, or create a soothing atmosphere with calming music.
- Pheromones and Essential Oils: Use these selectively, for example, by spraying them onto a cloth so that your pet can choose whether to move closer or away from it.
- Reflecting Together: Use the New Year’s transition to think about the beautiful moments of the past year. Share stories of shared experiences with your pets. This builds connection and distracts both of you.
- Being a Rock in the Storm: If you feel helpless, remember that your present, calm energy is often the best thing you can offer your pet. Sometimes, we don’t need to do much but simply be there.
A Personal Year-End Reflection
New Year’s Eve is also a time to look back on the funny, touching, and harmonious moments of the year. Share your thoughts with your beloved companions. What were your highlights? What goals did you achieve together? And what do you wish for the coming year?
Our animals sense when we include them in our lives and make them part of our visions. Perhaps you can end the evening with a ritual: light a candle, express gratitude, or simply let the evening fade away peacefully together.
A Wish for You
I wish you and your families – whether with two or four legs – a wonderful start to the new year! May 2024 be filled with health, joy, inspiring encounters, and delightful surprises. And may your bond with your animal companions grow even stronger.
Take good care of yourselves and your loved ones – and let the new year sparkle!
Lots of love to you and your pet
